Iron & Steel industry requires several inputs like Iron ore, Coking Coal, Limestone, Manganese etc. Almost all of these inputs are gross i.e. weight losing and hence the Iron & Steel plant ought to be located near the source of these raw materials. The eastern Indian region of Chhotanagpur plateau has availability of all these inputs in close proximity of each other and hence Iron & Steel industry is well established in this region. Southern India on the other hand has few Iron & steel plants. Southern India has good quality Iron ore (in Bellary-Hospet region, Chikmagalur etc.) as well as limestone. But south India lacks good quality coking coal. Hence the industry is not well developed in the region and most of the iron ore is exported directly through New Mangalore port.
