Rainbow is produced when sunlight falls on drops of rain. Which of the following phenomena is responsible for this?
1) Dispersion 2) Refraction
3) Internal Reflection
Select the correct answers
1 and 2 only
2 and 3 only
1, 2 and 3
1 and 3 only
The formation of rainbow is due to the dispersion of white light from the sun and the phenomenon of total internal reflection from the water droplets suspended in air.
Therefore, when light enters a water droplet,at first it is dispersed due to refraction. Refraction is the bending of light when passing from one medium to another. Even when the refracted light falls on the other surface of the water droplet some it is internally reflected.
