• In the Bombay Deccan region, the British had introduced the Ryotwari settlement as the system of land revenue. Under this system, the revenue of land was fixed on a yearly basis. In the Ryotwari system, the agreement was between the government and the ryot (cultivator) directly. The revenue was fixed according to the soil-type and the paying capacity of the farmer. • The movement adopted a variety of methods in its course. When the peasants of the village failed to convince the local moneylender to not act on a court decree and pull down a peasant’s house, they organized a complete social boycott of the ‘outsider’ moneylenders to compel them to accept their demands in a peaceful manner.
