Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebration

Context: The day marks the completion of the 100 years of the ‘Chauri Chaura’ incident, a landmark event in India’s fight for independence.

  • Last year Prime Minister inaugurate the Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebrations at Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur on 4th February 2021.
  • The centenary celebrations and various events planned by the State government will begin in all 75 districts of the State from 4th February 2021 and will continue till 4th February 2022.

About Chauri Chaura incident

  • The incident took place on 4 February 1922 at Chauri Chaura in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
  • A large group of freedom fighters of  Congress and Khilafat activists participating in the Non-cooperation movement were fired upon by police, leading to the death of many of them.
  • In retaliation, protestors attacked and set fire to the Chauri Chaura police station, killing many of its occupants.
  • Mahatma Gandhi, who was completely against violence, stopped the Non-cooperation movement on 12 February the same year.
  • The British government, in response, imposed martial law in the area and arrested hundreds of people including Mahatma Gandhi.

  • The  Non-cooperation movement was launched on September 4, 1920, by Mahatma Gandhi.
  • This movement was started with the aim of self-governance and obtaining full independence or Purna Swaraj.
  • It was started in the light of the withdrawal of the support by Indian National Congress (INC) for British reforms following the Rowlatt Act and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
