Context: Recently, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) announced that it will offer a free Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) in any of their preferred 22 official Indian languages along with every IN domain booked by the registrant.
Key Points

• According to the ministry of electronics and IT, under the new offer applicants will also get a free email in local language. 
• This offer has been created to stimulate the adoption of ‘Bharat’ (IDN) domain name and proliferation of local language content.

About National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) 

• National Internet Exchange of India is a non-profit Company incorporated under Section 25 of the India Companies Act, 1956 with an objective of facilitating improved internet services in the country.

It was working since 2003 for spreading the internet technology to the citizens of India through the following activities: –

• i) Internet Exchanges through which the internet data is exchanged amongst ISPs and between ISPs and CDNs.
• ii) IN Registry, managing and operation of IN country code domain and ???? IDN domain for India.
• iii) IRINN, managing and operating Internet protocol (IPv4/IPv6).

MISSION
The Main Objects to be pursued by the Company on its incorporation are:

• To Promote Internet.
• To set up, when needed, in select location(s)/parts/regions of India Internet Exchanges/Peering Points.
• To enable effective and efficient routing, peering, transit and exchange of the Internet traffic within India.
• To continuously work for enhancing and improving the quality of Internet and Broadband services.

What are ISP members?

• ISP refers to Internet service provider. ISPs are the companies such as BSNL, Bharti, Reliance, MTS etc. that provide Internet Access. ISP can be a hosting ISP or a Transit ISP. Hosting ISP are providers of email, file hosting & web hosting. Transit ISP provides the access to the internet.

What is International Bandwidth?

• Bandwidth is available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bits/second or multiples of it (kilobits/s, megabits/s etc.). 
• In context with the websites, bandwidth" is maximum amount of data transfer each month or given period is monthly data transfer. 
• In context with the networks, bandwidth is achieved throughput i.e., the average rate of successful data transfer through a communication path. When the data transfer is international, it would be international bandwidth.

Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN)

• Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN) in India that provides allocation and registration services of IP addresses and AS numbers, and contributes to the society by providing Internet-related information as a non-profit, affiliation-based organisation, and performing research, education and enlightenment activities.
• Govt. of India, Department of Electronics & Information Technology endorsed the operations of National Internet Registry (NIR) to National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). NIR is an entity under the umbrella of a Regional Internet Registry (RIR) which is Asia Pacific Network Information centre (APNIC).
• NIR is entrusted with the task of coordinating IP Address allocation with other Internet resource management function at national level in the country.
• NIXI was recognized by APNIC in March 2012 to become the NIR for the country. The NIR has been named as Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN). Collective efforts of NIXI and ISPAI have led to the formation of IRINN in the country.
