Recently, India launched a Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) Project on the World Day to Combat Desertification.
With reference to the FLR project, consider the following statements:
1. It is a flagship project to achieve Bonn Challenge Pledge, that was joined by India at the last UN Convention to Combat Desertification Conference of Parties.
2. According to State of Environment 2019 report, wind erosion is the main cause for desertification in India.
3. Implementation of the drinking water schemes will be a key component of the FLR project.
Which of the statement(s) given above is/are correct?
1 and 2 only
Incorrect Answer 2 and 3 only
Incorrect AnswerNone of the above
Correct AnswerExplanation:
Explanation:
FLR project is a pilot project to restore degraded forest landscapes in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Karnataka over the next 42 months. The project will eventually cover all such landscapes. It is launched in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature and aims to enhance the capacity on forest landscape restoration by developing and adapting best practices for sustainable land management and putting into place some monitoring protocols to combat desertification. It is aligned with India’s voluntary commitment under Bonn Challenge Pledge to bring into restoration 13 million hectares of degraded and deforested land by 2020 and an additional 8 million hectares by 2030. Bonn Challenge Pledge was adopted by UN Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties to enhance countries Nationally Determined Contributions.
Hence, statement 1 is incorrect.
According to State of Environment 2019 report published by Center for Science and Environment desertification has increased in 26 of the 29 states between 2003-05 and 2011- 13. Overall 30% of country’s area is being affected by land degradation. Its main causes are water erosion (11%), vegetation degradation (9%), wind erosion (5.5%), salinity (1.12%), human settlements (0.69%) and others. Hence, statement 2 is incorrect.
Implementation of drinking water schemes is a integral part of the Desert Development Programme of Department of Land Resources but no such mention has been made with respect to the FLR project. Hence, statement 3 is incorrect.
