Consider the following statements:
1.Coal based power plants are among those, which emit mercury into environment.
2. Minamata Convention aims at phasing out the use of mercury and mercury based products.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
1 only
2 only
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
Mercury from coal burning is often in the form of small particles. The mercury is rarely just the metal, it is almost always a compound, often organometallic, that is readily absorbed by plants and animals. The most common compound of concern in the environment is methylmercury. The mercury emitted from coal-burning power plants falls onto soils and washes into waterways.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a multilateral environmental agreement that addresses specific human activities which are contributing to widespread mercury pollution. Implementation of this agreement will help reduce global mercury pollution over the coming decades.
Major highlights of the Minamata Convention include a ban on new mercury mines, the phase-out of existing ones, the phase-out and phase-down of mercury use in a number of products and processes, control measures on emissions to air and on releases to land and water, and the regulation of the informal sector of artisanal and small-scale gold mining. The Convention also addresses interim storage of mercury and its disposal once it becomes waste, sites contaminated by mercury as well as health issues.
Hence both statements are correct.
