the first Buddhist Council was held soon after the death of the Buddha, around 400 BCE, under the patronage of king Ajatashatru. Its objective was to preserve the Buddha's sayings (suttas) and the monastic discipline. Within 100 years of the Buddha's death, significant disputes arose, primarily in the areas of monastic discipline.
