With reference to Ocean Mean Temperature (OMT), which of the following statements is/are correct?

OMT is measured up to a depth of 26°C isotherm which is 129 meters in the south-western Indian Ocean during January – March.
OMT collected during January March can be used in assessing whether the amount of rainfall in monsoon will be less or more than a certain long-term mean.

Statement 1 is incorrect: Ocean Mean Temprature , which is measured up to a depth of 26 degree C isotherm, is more stable and consistent, and the spatial spread is also less. The 26 degree C isotherm is seen at depths varying from 50-100 metres. During January-March, the mean 26 degree C isotherm depth in the Southwestern Indian Ocean is 59 metres.
Statement 2 is correct: The researchers analysed 25-year OMT data from 1993 to 2017. They found that unlike Sea Surface Temperature, OMT was able to correctly predict 20 out of 25 years (80% success rate) if the amount of rainfall during the summer monsoon was more or less than the long-term mean.

Note: Ocean mean temperature is a better indicator of monsoon rainfall than sea surface temperatures. This is because OMT measures the ocean’s thermal energy, and on the other hand SST is influenced by surface winds, evaporation, thick clouds etc. OMT is a more stable indicator.

Hence option 2nd is correct.
