*Sangam literature is one of the main sources used for documenting the early history of the ancient Tamil country. *Sangam literature is still the main source for the early Cholas, the Pandyas and the Cheras. *Tamil literature belonging to the Sangam period had been lost. The literature currently available from this period is perhaps just a fraction of the wealth of material produced during this golden age of Tamil civilisation. The Sangam literature, is generally but not uniformly assigned to the period ranging from c. 200 BCE to CE 300. There is however one point of commonalty within the heterogeneous nature of the Sangam literature which relates to the operation of Akam and Puram genres of compositions. Akam refers to the interior or love poems, while Puram deals with the exterior/public or war poems.
