Consider the following statements about Ocean Tides
Because of its huge mass, sun’s tide- generating gravitational force is more than that of the moon.
A horizontal movement of water that accompanies the rising and falling of the tide is called tidal current.
Knowledge of tides help in navigation of ships
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
2 only
1 and 3 only
2 and 3 only
All of the above
Statement 1 is incorrect because the gravitional pull of moon for tide is more due to the its proximity with earth. Whereas, sun being far has lesser effect. But due to sun's larfe mass, it is able to attract tides.
Statement 2 is correct : Tidal currents occur in conjunction with the rise and fall of the tide. The vertical motion of the tides near the shore causes the water to move horizontally, creating currents. When a tidal current moves toward the land and away from the sea, it “floods.” When it moves toward the sea away from the land, it “ebbs.” These tidal currents that ebb and flood in opposite directions are called “rectilinear” or “reversing” currents.
Statement 3 is correct because :High tides help in navigation. They raise the water level close to the shores. This helps the ships to arrive at harbour more easily.
