The Government of India constituted a statutory body, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau in 2007, by amending the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, a special Act to protect the wildlife in the country. The bureau would complement the efforts of the state governments, primary enforcers of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and other enforcement agencies of the country.
National Board for Wild Life is a “Statutory Organization” constituted under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Primary function of the Board is to promote the conservation and development of wildlife and forests. It has power to review all wildlife-related matters and approve projects in and around national parks and sanctuaries. No alternation of boundaries in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries can be done without approval of the NBWL.
There are ongoing talks to make wildlife corridors legal entities, on par with national parks or wildlife sanctuaries. It will help save such areas from the threat of mining, quarrying and grazing. Also, Sea weeds are not protected under the act
