Consider the following statements
Trenches are formed when the oceanic plate collides with the continental plate.
The Mid-Atlantic ridge was formed as the result of diverging plates and is characterised by continuous upwelling of molten lava from within the earth.
The northern part of Mid-Atlantic ridge is called Dolphin ridge and the southern part is called Challenger ridge.
The highest number of world’s earthquakes is observed in the region of Mid-Atlantic ridge.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
1 and 4 only
2 and 3 only
1,2 and 3 only
1, 2, 3 and 4
Statement 1 is correct: Trenches are formed by subduction, a geophysical process in which two or more of Earth's tectonic plates converge and the older, denser plate is pushed beneath the lighter plate and deep into the mantle, causing the seafloor and outermost crust (the lithosphere) to bend and form a steep, V-shaped depression.
Statement 2 is correct : The Mid Atlantic Ridge, like other ocean ridge systems, has developed as a consequence of the divergent motion between the Eurasian and North American, and African and South American Plates. As the mantle rises towards the surface below the ridge the pressure is lowered (decompression) and the hot rock starts to partially melt. This produces basaltic volcanoes when an eruption occurs above the surface and characteristic basalt “pillow lava” in underwater eruptions. In this way, as the plates move further apart new ocean lithosphere is formed at the ridge and the ocean basin gets wider. This process is known as “sea floor spreading” and results in a symmetrical alignment of the rocks of the ocean floor which get older with distance from the ridge crest.
Statement 3 is correct : Northern portion of the MAR is named the Dolphin Ridge, the equatorial part the Connecting Ridge, and the southern part the Challenger Ridge.
Statement 4 is incorrect : The world's greatest earthquake belt, the circum-Pacific seismic belt, is found along the rim of the Pacific Ocean, where about 81 percent of our planet's largest earthquakes occur.
