Many South Indian temples built eleventh century onwards, have the feature of towers erected over the entrance gateways of these walls, called as Gopuram.

The Great Living Chola Temples are temples built during the Chola rule in the south of India and neighboring islands. These sites includes 3 temples of 11th and 12th century. These 3 temples are the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, the Temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram.
The gopuram, is the tower, an oblong quadrangle, sometimes a square, with a passage through the centre and is situated on the entrance gateway, At the Brihadesvara temple (Chola Temples) in Tanjore, it was architectural part of Temple structure.
