With reference to Ultima Thule which was recently in news, consider the following statements:
1.It is a contact binary.
2.It is located in the Kuiper Belt.
3.It is the most distant object ever visited.
How many of the statements given above is/are correct?
Only One
Only Two
All Three
None
All three statements about Ultima Thule are correct.
Ultima Thule, officially named 486958 Arrokoth, is indeed a contact binary. This means it consists of two formerly separate bodies that have merged to form a single entity. Images from the New Horizons spacecraft showed that Ultima Thule has two connected lobes, indicative of its contact binary nature.
It is located in the Kuiper Belt, which is a region of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune, populated with many small icy bodies. The Kuiper Belt is known for its collection of frozen remnants from the early solar system.
Ultima Thule was the most distant object ever visited by a spacecraft at the time of the New Horizons flyby. New Horizons, a NASA space probe, flew past Ultima Thule on January 1, 2019, making it the farthest celestial body to be closely observed by a spacecraft.
Therefore, all three statements are correct.
