Kuchipudi is one of the classical styles of Indian dance. Its name is derived from a village near Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh, near Vijayawada.
Around the third and fourth decade of 20th century it emerged out of a long rich tradition of dance-drama of the same name.The music that accompanies the dance is according to the classical school of Carnatic music and is delightfully syncopathic.
Unique feature of Kuchipudi is the Tarangam, in which the performer dances on the edges of a brass plate, executing complicated rhythmic patterns with dexterity, while sometimes also balancing a pot of water on the head.
