Glacial ice erodes and shapes the underlying rocks. Glaciers also deposit sediments in characteristic landforms. The two types of glaciers are:
Glaciers erode the underlying rock by abrasion and plucking. Mountain glaciers leave behind unique erosional features. When a glacier cuts through a ‘V’ shaped river valley, the glacier pucks rocks from the sides and bottom. This widens the valley and steepens the walls, making a ‘U’ shaped valley.
Glacial Landforms : U-Shaped Valleys, Fjords, and Hanging Valleys; Cirques; Nunataks, Arêtes, and Horns; Lateral and Medial Moraines; Terminal and Recessional Moraines; Glacial Till and Glacial Flour; Glacial Erratics; Kettles; Paternoster Lakes; Glacial Striations; Drumlins; Outwash Plains and Eskers
NOTE: Australia is the only continent without glaciers. Glaciers can only survive if the average temperature is freezing or less, so in warm areas they are found at high altitude. At low altitude they are only found in high latitudes. Glaciers are found at high latitude or at high altitude.
