Prakrits are a group of vernacular Middle Indo-Aryan languages used in India from around the 3rd century BCE to the 8th century CE. The term Prakrit is usually applied to the middle period of Middle Indo-Aryan languages, excluding earlier inscriptions and the later Pali. The Prakrits were used contemporaneously with the prestigious Classical Sanskrit of higher social classes. Meghaduta is a lyric poem written by Kalidasa, considered to be one of the greatest Sanskrit poets. The history of Indian theatre goes back to more than 5000 years. Natyashastra, written by Bharat Muni was the ancient treatise on Indian theatre. Theatre in India started as a narrative form such as singing, dancing and reciting. Once started as just a narrative form, Indian theatre gradually developed to be an independent form of expression.
