Which of the following factors determine the distribution of temperature of ocean water?
1. The average daily duration of insolation and its intensity.
2. The albedo of the sea surface.
3. The physical characteristics of the sea surface i.e. the boiling point in the case of higher salinity and vice-versa.
4. The presence of submarine ridges.
5. Location and shape of the sea.
Which of the above statements are correct?
1, 2 and 3 Only
2, 3 and 4 Only
1, 4 and 5 Only
All of the above
Albedo is the fraction of solar energy (shortwave radiation) reflected from the Earth back into space. It is a measure of the reflectivity of the earth's surface. Ice, especially with snow on top of it, has a high albedo: most sunlight hitting the surface bounces back towards space. Water is much more absorbent and less reflective. So, if there is a lot of water, more solar radiation is absorbed by the ocean than when ice dominates.
Insolation is the solar radiation that reaches the earth's surface. It is measured by the amount of solar energy received per square centimetre per minute. Insolation affects temperature. The more the insolation, the higher the temperature. In any given day, the strongest insolation is received at noon. Submarine ridges are any section of the narrow, largely continuous range of submarine mountains that extends into all the major oceans and at which new oceanic lithosphere is created by the rise of magma from the earth’s interior.
