• Gangetic Dolphin was declared the national aquatic animal (2009).
• The Gangetic river ystem is home to a vast variety of aquatic life, including the Gangetic dolphin (Platanista gangetica). 
• The Gangetic dolphin is one of five species of river dolphin found around the world. 
• Habitat: It is found mainly in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems.
• Population:  There are about 1,272 dolphins in Uttar Pradesh and 962 in Assam.
• Ganges river dolphins once lived in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. But the species is extinct from most of its early distribution ranges.
• Conservation status: The Gangetic dolphin remains listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
• The Ganges river dolphin can only live in freshwater and is essentially blind. They hunt by emitting ultrasonic sounds, which bounces off of fish and other prey, enabling them to “see” an image in their mind.
