Raja Ram Mohan Roy preferred the English education to the Sanskrit education as the former had more practical applicability in the contemporary society.

Raja Ram Mohun Roy, a 19th century social reformer, also known as 'The Father of the Bengal Renaissance', supported English as a medium of teaching in India as he believed that teaching through English language was superior to traditional Indian education system. He was equally and strongly against such other social evils as child-marriage, casteism, polygamy and exploitation of women. He also recommended education should be imparted to women.
Wood's Dispatch 1854 first time recommended that the primary education should be given in the vernacular medium. It also laid emphasis on women's education at all levels. It recommended english be the medium of higher education.
Hunter Commission on education was appointed by Lord Ripon in 1882 with aim : (i) to look into the complaints of the non-implementation of the Wood’s Despatch of 1854;(ii) the contemporary status of elementary education in the British territories; and (iii) suggest means by which this can be extended and improved. It suggested two administrative reforms : (i) Gradual withdrawal of the Government from direct enterprise in secondary education. (ii) Maintenance of some Secondary schools by the Govt. as Model to aided schools.
Saddler Commission (1917-19) was appointed under the chairmanship of M.E. Saddler who was the vice Chancellor of the university of Leeds. The Saddler University Commission reported that the condition of the secondary education need to be improved in order to improve the standard of university Education. It enocouraged growth of colleges in towns.
