The first root that comes from a plant is called the radicle. A root's four major functions are 1) absorption of water and inorganic nutrients, 2) anchoring of the plant body to the ground, and supporting it, 3) storage of food and nutrients, 4) vegetative reproduction and competition with other plants. S3: The stem conducts the water and nutrients absorbed by the roots to leaves and other parts of the plant. S1: The leaves prepare food. This food travels through the stem and is stored in different parts of a plant.
We eat some of these as roots— like carrot, radish, sweet potato, turnip and tapioca. We also eat many other parts of a plant where the food is stored.
