Under Article 72, President has power to grant :

pardon (complete pardon from death sentence);
reprieve (stay on execution for temporary period) eg: date of execution shifted;
respite (awarding lesser punishment on special grounds) eg: pregnant lady gets 7 year term instead 14 year term;
remission (reduction of sentence without changing its character);
commutation (substitution of one form of punishemnt for another form which is of lighter character) eg: a death sentence may be commuted to rigorous imprisonment;
to suspend, remit or commute sentence by court martial.

Under Article 161, Governor has power to grants : pardons (excluding death sentence, absolve offender from all punishments); reprieve; respite; remission; commutation. Governor cannot pardon sentence of death or by court martial.
