Statement 1 is correct : In 1453 Ottoman Turks captured Constantinople( Present Istanbul) ,now land routes between Europe and India were not safe .thats why European countries tried to discover alternate route to India and East Indies.

Statement 2 is also correct : One of the cause of discovery of new route and new territories was to spread of Christianity , Portuguese were the champion of this cause.

The Renaissance had fostered a spirit of inquiry that had revolutionized geographical ideas. Though the church had supported the theory that the earth is flat, scholars established the fact that the earth is round. This new idea was highly useful for the geographical explorations.
