Context: Recently, one of Amur Falcons returned back to Manipur after covering around 20,000 km up to Somalia of South Africa which were tagged through the GPS Satellite Radio transmitters in November, 2019.
About Amur Falcon
Its scientific name is 'Falco amurensis' which breeds in South-east Russia and northern China.
It migrates west through India and across the Arabian Sea to Southern Africa.
It feeds on dragonflies that follow a similar migration path over Arabian Sea.
It is listed as 'Least Concern' under IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
It is the world’s longest travelling raptors.
It gets its name from the Amur River that forms the border between Russia and China.
Doyang Lake in Nagaland is better known as a stopover for the Amur falcons during their annual migration from their breeding grounds to warmer South Africa. Thus, Nagaland is also known as the “Falcon Capital of the World,”.
It is protected under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and the Convention on Migratory Species.
