    In Depth - Law Commission of India

    About Law commission: 

    • The Law Commission of India is non satuatory, executive body established by an order of the Government of India for a fixed tenure of three years.
    • The Commission is established for a fixed tenure and works as an advisory body to the Ministry of Law and Justice.
    • The first Law Commission was established during the British Raj era in 1834 by the Charter Act of 1833. It was presided over by Lord Macaulay. After that, three more Commissions were established in pre-independent India. 
    • Government established the First Law Commission of Independent India in 1955 with the then Attorney-General of India, Mr. M. C. Setalvad, as its Chairman.
    • The Indian Code of Civil Procedure, the Indian Contract Act, the Indian Evidence Act, the Transfer of Property Act. etc. are products of the first four Law Commissions.
    • The Commission welcomes suggestions from any person, institution or organisation on the issues under consideration of the Commission, which may be sent to the Member-Secretary.Since then, we've had 21 Law Commissions, each of them making important contributions towards the progressive development and codification of laws in India.
    • The 22nd Law Commission was approved on 19th February by the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    Composition: The 22nd Law Commission will consist of –a full-time Chairperson;four full-time Members (including Member-Secretary);Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs as ex-officio Member;Secretary, Legislative Department as ex officio Member; and not more than five part-time Members.
