Context: As per the latest key world energy statistics published by the IEA in 2019, India is the 3rd largest producer of electricity in the world and it ranks 106th in terms of per capita consumption in 2017.

• India witnessed a tremendous growth in electricity production. Over the past seven years, electricity production grew to 34 percent, making India the third-largest producer of electricity. 
• India has now trumped Japan and Russia, which had 27 and 8.77 percent more electricity generation capacity installed, respectively, than India seven years ago.
• India produced 1,160.10 billion units (BU) of electricity–one BU is enough to power 10 million households (one household using average of about 3 units per day) for a month–in financial year (FY) 2017  as per report by India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), a trust established by the commerce ministry.
• With a production of 1,423 BU in FY 2016, India was the third largest producer and the third largest consumer of electricity in the world, behind China (6,015 BU) and the United States (4,327 BU).
• Although power generation has grown more than 100-fold since independence, growth in demand has been even higher due to accelerating economic activity.
• Electricity is also one of the eight core industries of India.
• Electricity use and access are strongly correlated with economic development.

Government Initiatives to provide this at pan India level

• Saubhagya Scheme: The 'Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana' was launched by the Government of India with the aim of providing electricity access to over 40 million families in the country.
• The Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana: UDAY was launched by the Ministry of Power to help turn around the poor financial situation of state discoms. It also envisages development of renewable energy sector and availability of 24*7 Power For All at an affordable price.
• Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA): It aims to promote efficient lighting, enhance awareness on using efficient equipment which reduce electricity bills and help preserve the environment. The project is spearheaded by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited.
