Consider the following statements
1. The average annual temperature of the Oceans in Northern hemisphere is more than those in southern hemisphere.
2. The highest average annual temperature of the ocean is recorded at the equator.
Which of the above statements is/are correct?
1 only
2 only
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
The highest temperature is not recorded at the equator rather it is a bit north of it. This is because heavy equitorial rain led to decrese in the temperature. Also we should note that the average annual temperature of all the oceans is 17.2°C. The average annual temperatures for the northern and southern hemispheres are 19.4°C and 16.1°C respectively. This is because the NH has more land and, therefore, heats up more in summer because of the lesser heat capacity. Many scientists argue that it may be also because the ocean transports heat northward across the equator.
