Context-Recently India’s telecommunication satellite GSAT-30 was successfully launched into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) from Kourou launch base, French Guiana by Ariane-5 VA-251.

• A European communication satellite named EUTELSAT KONNECT was also launched with GSAT-30.
• GSAT-30 weighs 3,357-kg and will be gradually adjusted into a orbit 36,000 km from the earth.
• It was launched from the foreign launcher because it is much heavier than the lifting capacity of its geostationary launch vehicle GSLV-MkII (It has the capacity to lift 2000kg)
• The GSLV-MkIII can lift up to 4,000 kg, but ISRO plans to use the upcoming MkIIIs mainly for its first human space flight Gaganyaan of 2022.

About GSAT-30

• GSAT-30 is to serve as replacement to INSAT-4A spacecraft services with enhanced coverage. 
• The satellite provides Indian mainland and islands coverage in Ku-band and extended coverage in C-band covering Gulf countries, a large number of Asian countries and Australia.
• The designed in-orbit operational life of GSAT-30 is more than 15 years.
• The communication satellite, aimed at providing high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services, went off from the Ariane Launch Complex in Kourou, a French territory located in northeastern coast of South America.
• The European space consortium Arianespace's Ariane 5 vehicle injected GSAT-30 into the orbit
• A transponder is a device that transmits and responds to signals. The satellite will help in supporting VSAT network, teleport services, DTH televisions services, cellular backhaul connectivity and digital news gathering services.

INSAT-4A:

• The Indian National Satellite System was a series of geostationary satellites that were launched for telecommunications, meteorology, broadcasting and search and rescue operations. The INSAT-4A was launched in 2005  mainly for communication purposes.

Ariane :

• • Ariane Space is a commercial satellite launching organization that was founded in 1980. Since then, it has launched 23 Indian satellites.
  • APPLE Experimental was the first Indian satellite to be launched by Ariane.
  • The launch centres of the organization is located in Washington D.C, Tokyo, Singapore, French Guiana and Baikonur Cosmodrome (Central Asia).
