India is the second largest consumer and third largest producer of tobacco and a plethora of tobacco products are available at very low prices. Nearly 275 million adults (15 years and above) in India (35% of all adults) are users of tobacco, according to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey India, 2009-10.
The Government of India enacted various legislations to control tobacco use. Recently the government enacted the Cigarettes and Other tobacco products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act in 2003. The Act is applicable to all products containing tobacco in any form i.e. cigarettes, cigars, bidis, gutka, pan masala, khaini, snuff etc.
