The Tertiary coal deposits of Arunachal Pradesh occur within a long narrow belt trending NE-SW, ranging in age between Upper Eocene to Oligocene. These coal deposits are understood to have originated in the foreland basins specially in the zone of Shuppen. The thicker, economically viable seams are particularly confined to Namchik-Namphuk coalfields.
