It is observed every year globally on 27 September with the aim of raising awareness about importance of tourism among global community as well as to encourage its social, political, cultural and economic values.

• The celebrations of World Tourism Day have been led by United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) since 1970.
• World Tourism Day 2019 Theme– “Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all”, is in line with UNWTO’s overall emphasis on skills, education and jobs throughout the year.
• This is for the very first time that India will host the day in its National Capital, New Delhi.

United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO): It is the United Nations specialized agency which works towards promoting sustainable, responsible and universally accessible tourism.

• It was founded in 1975. It is headquartered in Madrid, Spain.
• United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESCO) is its parent organization.
