Context-The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has lost contact with Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan-2.

• Speaking about the situation, Isro chief Dr K Sivan said everything was normal till the time Vikram lander was 2.1 km above Moon's surface.
• The mission suffered a technical glitch moments before Vikram's scheduled landing on Moon's surface.
• The descent hoped to reduce its speed from 6048 km per hour to about 7 km per hour or lower to enable a soft landing

Chandrayaan 2 – India’s second Lunar Mission

• Chandrayaan 2 is an Indian lunar mission that will explore the Moon’s south polar region. No country has ever gone there before.
• The launch vehicle will be carrying an orbiter, a rover named Pragyan and a lander named Vikram.

Chandrayaan 1 vs Chandrayaan 2

• The Chandrayaan 1 mission was launched in October 2008 and was active in operations until August 2009. The mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor. The Chandrayaan 1 mission was launched using the PSLV-XL rocket, serial number C11 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre located in Sriharikota.
• Chandrayaan 2 mission was launched from Sriharikota Space Center on 22 July 2019 to the Moon by a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III). It includes a lunar orbiter, lander and rover, all developed domestically. The main scientific objective is to map the location and abundance of lunar water.
• Unlike Chandrayaan-1, Chandrayaan-2 will attempt to soft-land(But failed) its Vikram module on the lunar surface and deploy a six-wheeled Rover, Pragyaan on the Moon to carry out several scientific experiments. The lift-off mass of Chandrayaan-1 was 1380 kg while Chandrayaan-2 weighs 3850 kg.

1. Launcher – The GSLV Mk-III is India’s most powerful launcher to date and has been completely designed and fabricated from within the country.
2. Orbiter – The Orbiter will observe the lunar surface and relay communication between Earth and Chandrayaan 2’s Lander — Vikram.
3. Lander – The lander called ‘Vikram’ is designed to execute India’s first soft landing on the lunar surface. ‘Vikram’ is named after the space luminary, Dr Vikram A Sarabhai, who spearheaded India’s nascent space programme.
4. Rover – The rover is a 6-wheeled, AI-powered vehicle named Pragyan, which translates to ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit. The Rover can travel up to 500 meters (half a kilometre) from the landing spot on the moon.

Helpful for follow-on mission

• Former US astronaut and space analyst Jerry M Linenger said, India was trying to do something very difficult,Unfortunately, it never quite made it to the hover point.That would be at an altitude of about 400 metre if it had made it to that point, and even if it had not succeded beyond that,It would have been helpful because radar altimeter and lasers could have been tested.This would be helpful for follow on missions.

Orbiter Is Still Orbiting the Moon

• The main Orbiter of the Chandrayaan 2 mission is still orbiting the Moon, and sending live images and data all the way to Indian Space station in Sriharikota. 
• Even though the Lander and the Rover failed to land on the Moon’s South Pole, the mission is 95% success, and this is not entirely a failure.
• The Orbiter has a life of more than a year, and it will keep on sending us crucial data and information about the Moon, which has never happened before.
• On the contrary, the life span of the Rover was only 14 days, and it eventually would have run out of steam.
• This is not a failure, but a success

The Cost Of Chandrayaan 2 Mission Is Less Than A Movie

• The total cost of Chandrayaan 2 mission is only Rs 978 crore, out of which Rs 608 crore was spent on the spacecraft systems, and the rest Rs 375 crore was spent on the GSLV MK-III launcher.
• Compared to this, the Statue of Unity in Gujarat costed Rs 2966 crore, and the movie Avengers: Endgame was produced at an expense of Rs 3636 crore.
• The world is in awe of ISRO and Indian Scientists, as to how could they send a mission to the Moon, at such a low cost, and this, is the real success of India. 
• There is no way we can define this as failure.

The Solid Experience Of Chandrayaan 2 Will Propel Our Ambitions

• The ultimate aim of ISRO is to land on Mars and other planets in the deep space.
• And the lunar mission: Chandrayaan 2 was only a step in that direction. We plan to create a sort of pit-stop on the Moon, where we can stock fuel and other resources for deep space mission to Mars, Sun and other planets and objects in the Space.
• The vital and crucial experience of Chandrayaan 2 will propel us to launch even more missions to the Moon, and eventually create a base there, which only three other countries have been able to do so.
• India is proud of the ISRO’s achievements and this small failure to land on the Moon will not disrupt us.
