Prior to the Indian First War Of Independence in 1857, there were few gun control laws in India.But, in the same year as the passing of the Vernacular Press Act, the Arms Act was passed.This Act prevented the Indians to keep arms without appropriate license. Its violation would be a criminal offence.The Europeans and the Anglo- Indians were exempted from the operation of these legislations.The Arms Act, 1959 (amended n 21 was enacted to consolidate and amend the law relating to arms and ammunition in order to curb illegal weapons and violence stemming from them.
