On which one of the following conservative laws, does a rocket work?
Mass
Energy
Linear momentum
Angular momentum
Rockets work on the principle of conservation of momentum. The rockets gain momentum equal to the momentum of the gas expelled from the engine but in opposite direction they continue to expel gases after the rocket has begun moving and hence rockets continue to gain more and more momentum so instead of traveling at steady speed they get faster and faster as long as engines are operating. The acceleration of rocket is given as a=mv/M as the mass decreases the rocket accelerates.
