The Revolt of 1857 was invoked by a band of sepoys from Merrut on 11 May 1857. The Revolt at Meerutand the capture of Delhi was the precursor to a widespread mutiny by the sepoys and rebellion almost allover the North India, as well as Central and Western India. South India remained quiet and Punjab andBengal were only marginally affected. It had embraced almost every cantonment in Bengal and a few inBombay. Only the Madras army remained totally loyal. The entire Bengal army soon rose in revoltwhich spread quickly. Awadh, Rohilkhand, the Doab, the Bundelkhand, Central India, large parts ofBihar and the East Punjab all shook off British authority.
