A Forward Policy is a set of principles of foreign policy applicable to territorial and border disputes.Emphasis is placed on securing control of disputed areas by invasion and annexation, or by the creation ofcompliant buffer states.
Passes of the north-west seemed to hold the keys to the gateway of India. The need was felt forAfghanistan to be under control of a friendly prince. The problem of imperial defence and search for ascientific frontier towards the north-west brought the English into a clash with the hardy Afghans.
Auckland, who came to India as the Governor-General in 1836, advocated a forwardpolicy. Through it, British wanted to replace Dost Mohammad by Shah Shuja. This policy was adopted byAuckland during First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). In between, he was replaced by Lord Ellenboroughwhich brought an end to first Anglo-Afghan war. The same policy was adopted by Lord Lytton in thesecond Anglo-Afghan war (1878-80).
