3. It prohibited the Christian missionariesto travel to India.
Which of the statements given above is/arecorrect?
1 and 3 only
1 only
2 and 3 only
1, 2 and 3
The Charter Act of 1813 is considered as the real beginning of Western Education in India because itprovided for allocation of one hundred thousand per year for two specific purposes: first, the encouragement of the learned natives of India and the revival of and improvement of literature; secondly, the promotion of a knowledge of the sciences amongst the inhabitants of the country. Hence, statement 1 is correct.
The Act was silent on the introduction of English education. It did not immediately decide the nature ofeducation to be provided to the Indians. It was rather vague in its language and was open to interpretation. The new General Committee on Public Instruction was dominated by the orientalists, who went on toestablish a Sanskrit College at Calcutta, two more Oriental Colleges at Agra and Delhi. It was only whenWilliam Bentinck became the Governor General in 1828 that the balance shifted in favour of theAnglicists. T.B. Macaulay was appointed as the President of the General Committee on Public Instruction. The blueprint for the introduction of English education in India was provided by the Macaulay's famousMinute on Indian Education. Hence, statement 2 is not correct.
The Act also allowed the missionaries to travel to India. Christian missionaries and European individualslike David Hare started opening schools in all parts of India, where English became the medium of instruction. Hence, statement 3 is not correct
