Consider the following states which were annexed by British before the 1857 war:
1. Satara
2. Nagpur
3. Udaipur
4. Jhansi
5. Awadh
Which of the above were annexed under the policy of Doctrine of lapse?
1,2 and 3 only
4 and 5 only
1, 2, 3, 4 only
3, 4 and 5 only
Lord Dalhousie implemented his policy of annexation, doctrine of lapse, under this doctrine, when ruler of protected state died without a natural heir, his state was not pass to an adopted heir as sanctioned by age old tradition of the country, Instead it was to be annexed to British India unless the adoption had been clearly approved earlier by British authorities. Many states including Satara, Nagpur, Jhansi and Udaipur were annexed by applying this doctrine. Lord Dalhousie was keen on annexing the kingdom of Awadh but this task is difficult because Nawabs of Awadh had been British allies since the battle of Buxar. The Nawab of the Awadh had many heirs and could not therefore be covered by doctrine of lapse. The Awadh had annexed on basis of mis governance but not under the doctrine of lapse.
