Jallikattu is celebrated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebration on Maattu Pongal day. Jallikattu also known as ‘Eru thazhuvuthal and Manchuvirattu’, is a traditional event in which a bull (Bos indicus) is released and youngsters attempt to take control of it. In 2017 Tamil Nadu passed a bipartisan bill, with the accession of the Prime Minister, exempting jallikattu from the Prevention of Cruelity to Animals Act (1960).
