When light travels through the atmosphere, it gets scattered by the air molecules. The scattering of light takes place when the size of the scattering object is tiny as compared to the wavelength of light. The angle through which molecules of air scatter sunlight in the atmosphere varies inversely as the fourth power of the wavelength called Rayleigh Law of scattering.
