“Biodiversity Heritage Sites” (BHS) are areas that are ecologically fragile ecosystems. It may be terrestrial, coastal or even inland waters. Its components include: richness of wild as well as domesticated species or intra-specific categories, high endemism, presence of rare and threatened species, keystone species, species of evolutionary significance, wild ancestors of domestic/cultivated species or their varieties, past pre-eminence of biological components represented by fossil beds and having significant cultural, ethical or aesthetic values and are important for the maintenance of cultural diversity, with or without a long history of human association with them. In 2016, the Ameenpur Lake, one of the few urban freshwater bodies left out in Telangana was given the status of Biodiversity Heritage Site. This lake once served as irrigation tank as part of a chain of tanks, but later got disconnected from the rest. Nowadays, it is the visited by bird watchers as a variety of avian species including migratory and resident bird species can be easily spotted here.
