Consider the following differences between Soaps and Detergents:
Detergents are carbonic compounds which are not alkaline, Soap are made from fat and alkali
Soaps are biodegradable while detergents are non biodegradable
Which of the above statements is/are correct?
1 Only
2 Only
Both 1 & 2
Neither 1 nor 2
Soaps are biodegradable and do not create pollution in our rivers and streams while Detergents are biodegradable and create pollution in our rivers and streams.
Soaps are made from natural ingredients, such as plant oils (coconut, vegetable, palm, pine) or acids derived from animal fat. Detergents, on the other hand, are synthetic, man-made derivatives. While soap is limited in its applications, detergents can be formulated to include other ingredients for all sorts of cleaning purposes.
Examples of soaps: sodium palmitate and sodium stearate. Examples of detergents: deoxycholic acid and sodium lauryl sulphate.
Hence only statement 2nd is correct.
