Akbar was the first Mughal ruler who followed a wise and tolerant religious policy. His palace was a hub of celebrations on Eid as well as Hindu festivals. He removed pilgrim tax on bathing at holy places like Banaras and Prayag. He abolished jaziya tax. Akbar was the first Muslim ruler who organised Haj Pilgrimage at the state expense and provided a subsidy to pilgrims.
