Ribosomes comprise a complex macromolecular machine, found within all living cells, that serves as the site of biological protein synthesis (translation). Ribosomes link amino acids together in the order specified by messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules. Mitochondria have a distinctive oblong or oval shape and are bounded by a double membrane. The inner membrane is folded creating structures known as cristae. Mitochondria are found in both animal and plant cells. They are found in all body cell types, except for mature red blood cells. The number of mitochondria within a cell varies depending on the type and function of the cell. Chloroplasts are the food producers of the cell. The organelles are only found in plant cells and some protists such as algae. Animal cells do not have chloroplasts. Chloroplasts work to convert light energy of the Sun into sugars that can be used by cells. Lysosome is a membrane-bound organelle found in many animal cells. They are spherical vesicles that contain hydrolytic enzymes that can break down many kinds of biomolecules. A lysosome has a specific composition, of both its membrane proteins, and its lumenal proteins.
