The Fundamental duties were added to the Constitution:
To make the fundamental rights more effective.
To check anti-national, subversive and unconstitutional agitations.
To accord priority to the directive principles over fundamental rights.
To achieve all the above objectives.
Fundamental Duties of citizens were added to the Constitution by the 42nd Amendment in 1976, upon the recommendations of the Swaran Singh Committee that was constituted by the government earlier that year. Fundamental duties are applicable only to citizens and not to the aliens. India borrowed the concept of Fundamental Duties from the USSR.
