In botany, a bud is an undeveloped or embryonic shoot and normally occurs in the axil of a leaf or at the tip of the stem. Bud, Small lateral or terminal protuberance on the stem of a vascular plant that may develop into a flower, leaf, or shoot. Buds arise from meristem tissue. In temperate climates, trees form resting buds that are resistant to frost in preparation for winter. Flower buds are modified leaves. Plants with terminal buds will concentrate their resources on that bud to make it grow and allow the plant to get taller. If the terminal bud is damaged, the plant can shift resources to different buds, such as axillary buds, to grow new plants.
