Albedo is the fraction of solar energy reflected from the Earth back into space. It is measure of the reflectivity of the Earth’s surface. The average albedo of the Earth from the upper atmosphere, its planetary albedo, is 30–35% because of cloud cover, but widely varies locally across the surface because of different geological and environmental features. An increase in global temperature causes snow and ice to melt, which decreases the extent to which they cover the surface, which then decreases Earth's albedo. This decrease in albedo means more energy is absorbed, which causes further warming and in turn causes more melting.
