Every 4 years artists from western Rajasthan come all the way to Tilonia, a village near Ajmer, to participate in Lok Utsav. The Utsav pays tribute to the local art and artists share the forum to learn the nuances of vibrant link between art, artists and society. It brings together singers, kalhelias( snake-catchers) and poison extractor nomadic gypsies(black costumes)
Maha Kumbh Mela (Great festival of ‘Urn’)- The biggest religions ceremony in the world, known as ‘Maha Kumbh Mela, took place in this millennium (2010) in the northern Indian town of Haridwar, on the banks of river Ganga. Here , millions of people had their ritual cleansing bath on eleven auspicious days from the beginning of January to the end of April. The rituals consists of ‘royal procession and ‘royal bath’ for sadhus.
Maghi Mela Celebrated after next day of Lohri in January in Punjab when a fair is organized to commemorate the velour of 40 Muktas.These Muktas sacrificed theirlives at battle of Khindrana fought between Mughal army and 10th guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh. A big cattle fair is held at village Lambi Dhab on the occasion of Maghi Mela. The good breed horses, for which Muktsar is famous throughout Punjab, are showcased at the fair.
Pushkar Fair (Rajasthan)- Annual 5 day camel and livestock fair, held in the town of Pushkar It is one of the world’s largest camel fairs. Apart from buying and selling of livestock it has become an important tourist attraction Its highlights are competions such as the ‘matter phod’, ‘longest moustache’, and ‘bridal competion.’
Bhavanath Fair at Junagadh: This fascinating fair or mela is held at the foothills of Mount Girnar. On the occasion of Mahashivaratri the site attracts crowds of devotees and holy men from all over India.
Bhadra Purnima at Ambaji: Ambaji, named after the Mother Goddess of the same name, is one of the 12 original Shakti Pithas, or shrines dedicated to her Divine Power. It draws tourists from all over India and abroad.
Tarnetar Fair: event in Gujarat, The fair, spanning three days, is held at Temple of Shiva or Trinetreshwar (three-eyed god), popularly known as Tarnetar.
Shamlaji Fair: The Shamlaji shrine and the site boast of an ancient and glorious heritage. Thousands of tribal people flock to the Shamlaji fair.
Vautha No Melo: Situated at the confluence of two rivers near Ahmedabad, the site attracts people of all communities. Animals, particularly donkeys and camels are sold in large numbers during this fair.
Chitra Vichitra Fair: The history of Chitra Vichitra fair can be traced back to the days of the Mahabharata. At the foothills of Aravalis, the venue of the fair is village Gumbhakhari, in the border area of Sabarkantha. The fair is a colourful celebration of the tribal lifestyles of the Bhils and Garasias.
