The bill has been successfully passed by the Parliament to raise maternity leaves for working women in formal sector from 12 weeks to 26 weeks for two surviving children.

• Only Canada with 50 weeks and Norway with 44 weeks as paid maternity leaves are ahead of India.
• The commissioning women (biological mother who uses her egg to create an embryo planted in any other woman) adopting child below the age of 3 months will be entitled for 12 weeks’ maternity leave.
• The bill provides crèche facility in all workplaces that has either 30 women employees or 50 employees in total with mother being allowed to visit the crèche 4 times during working hours.
• The employer may allow the women employee to work from home.

The onus of educating women about their rights under the bill lies on the employer.
